I found this:

It allowsan adjustment to be made to the index page of the board so you can get:

View your unread posts (3 unread post(s) in 2 topic(s))

so you know how many unread messages there are before clicking on the link.

Would this be useful?

I open the board every day at start of work and it would be useful to see if there are unread messages rather than have to navigate away from the index page to find out.

There is the 'show unread messages' just below the header (banner).
