Well then, problem solved....
My best guess is that somewhere along the line, since the last century when that code was originally written, the source changed in some way.. Don't know how.. DOn't care...
Substituting a £ for the œ solved the problem... no additional functions were necessary...
thank you for your suggestions... This conundrum never made any sense to me, and i was too close to the forest to see the trees (and the easy solution)...
